Social Change Movement: Cultural change through Psychedelics

Leary believed in reaching a higher conscience through the use of psychedelic drugs and LSD. He didn’t like the recreational use of the drug but wanted to use and prescribe it for psychological experiments. When using LSD he advocated using it in a controlled environment so they are safe from “bad trips”. He conducted experiments at Harvard University until he was fired. He has a PHd in psychology from Berkeley. He spoke about space migration, and life extension. LSD was not illegal at time time. He conducted experiments not only on prisoners but also on himself and friends. During his experiments he was supervised by allen Ginsberg who also suggested testing with psilocybin mushrooms. Leary used the acronym "SMI²LE" to describe his transhumanist agenda. SM: space migration I²: Intelligence increase LE: Life extension.

Leary also ran for governor of California against Reagan but had to drop because he was arrested for marijuana possession charges. His slogan was “Come together, join the party” Leary and John Lennon paired up and Lennon wrote the campaign song, “Come together”. Leary had collaborated with John Lennon and many other artists to produce music that reflect his psychedelic views

Timothy Leary had a rough family life that resulted in his first wife committing suicide and leaving him to take care of his two children. Later his daughter Susan also committed suicide.

*FUN FACT: He has seen the inside of 29 prisons worldwide!!!
